Specifications
Background
The Annexus series enables us to tell the story of special sites. Single vineyards expressions that are a snapshot of their soils, climate and vintage. For the Annexus Mataro, low-yielding centenarian vines planted in 1916 from the Scholz vineyard in Light Pass are utilised.
Conditions
The 2022 vintage was set up beautifully with good soil moisture carrying over from the mild 2021 vintage. A significant October hail event reduced yields in some vineyards, but luckily most escaped without impacting quality. La Nina influenced weather patterns resulted in mild harvest conditions again, allowing for even flavour accumulation and vibrant aromatics and acidity. A standout season. Mataro was sourced from a single dry grown centenarian vineyard in the Light Pass subdistrict of the Barossa Valley. Growing in sandy soils near the banks of the North Para River, this vineyard produces exceptionally low yields of intensely flavoured and firmly structured fruit.
Winemaking
The fruit was fermented in small open top stainless-steel fermenters with twice daily pump overs for 8 days.
Maturation
Maturation for 15 months in fine-grained French oak (15% in a new French hogshead, the balance in seasoned hogsheads and puncheons). 250 cases made.
Grape Variety
Mataro
